Thousands of applicants explored employment opportunities at a two-day retail trade fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), which offered 1,649 jobs at SM North EDSA – The Annex in Quezon City recently.
The DOLE said 26 participating companies opened vacancies for positions such as cashiers, sales clerks, customer assistants, warehouse personnel, and accounting staff during the fair held on June 16 to 17.
The event was mounted in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Philippine Retailers Association (PRA), and the Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP).
Of the 341 applicants who joined the fair, 43 or 12.6 percent were hired on the spot for roles including sales associate, cashier, bagger, and customer service assistant.
To assist job seekers in securing pre-employment requirements, a one-stop-shop processing center was set up in partnership with the Quezon City local government and agencies such as the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Pag-IBIG Fund, and PhilPost.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) also participated by promoting training programs aimed at improving the employability of applicants.
Organizers highlighted the economic significance of the wholesale and retail trade sector, which employs around 10.2 million Filipinos and contributes P4.9 trillion to the country’s gross domestic product.
Coinciding with the job fair, the DTI, led by Secretary Cristina A. Roque, launched “Section G: Job Blueprint for Wholesale & Retail Trade,” a roadmap to expand employment and strengthen enterprise development in the sector.
The blueprint was crafted in consultation with industry stakeholders, drawing insights from surveys, focus group discussions, and the 2024 Wholesale and Retail Trade Forum.
