A fugitive Chinese national has been turned over to China after he was barred entry to the Philippines, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Sunday, June 15.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado identified the fugitive as Shi Baoyi, 36, who was turned over to Chinese authorities last June 9 and boarded a flight to Guangzhou, China.
Viado said Shi was intercepted by immigration officers last May 29 upon his arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 from Hanoi, Vietnam after his name was found in the BI’s active blacklist order issued earlier this year.
He said that Shi attempted to disrupt the exclusion process when he deliberately slammed his head into the glass case of a fire extinguisher.
No act of resistance will deter us from enforcing the law. We remain committed to the President’s call for strong and secure borders, and we will continue to prevent foreign fugitives from using the Philippines as a safe haven,” he declared.
After the NAIA incident, Shi was treated by medical personnel and placed under detention while arrangements were made for his return to China.
Viado said that Chinese authorities told the BI that Shi had been convicted in Henan Province, China in 2022 for Undermining Credit Card Administration and was sentenced to two years and six months of imprisonment.
He added that Shi was also wanted for additional charges and was classified as undesirable and a fugitive from justice.
