NBI arrests Baguio City mayoral candidate on multiple fraud charges
A Baguio City mayoral candidate, who lost in the May 12 elections and wanted for multiple fraud charges, has been arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Pampanga.
NBI Director Jaime B. Santiago identified him as Mark Andrew Bandoc Directo.
Santiago said Directo was arrested on Monday, June 9, inside the ASEAN Clark Villas of the Clark Freeport Zone in Mabalacat City by operatives of the NBI Pampanga District Office (NBI-PAMDO) which implemented an arrest warrant issued by Baguio City regional trial court (RTC) Branch 79 last May 21 for estafa.
“The arrest of the Subject stemmed from multiple complaints of Estafa through Falsification of Documents filed against him by various individuals,” the NBI said.
“According to the complaints, Subject allegedly misrepresented himself in multiple transactions by using fraudulent documents, claiming ownership over several condominium buildings and villas within Clark Freeport Zone and in Baguio City,” it also said.
It added that Directo had told the complainants that “the sale of these properties was intended to finance his campaign for the May 2025 elections.”
Directo, the NBI said, had also entered into agreements with several individuals promising them a share in his purported profits from fictitious projects in Clark Freeport Zone and in Baguio City in exchange for funding his election campaign.
“Numerous individuals from Pampanga and Baguio City were reportedly defrauded by the Subject,” it added.
