Malabon gov't deploys 505 sandbags amid navigational gate repair

According to the city’s Public Information Office (PIO), the initiative is a response to the ongoing repair of the Malabon-Navotas River Navigational Gate by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). 
The gate’s temporary malfunction has affected flood control in parts of Malabon and neighboring Navotas.
The sandbagging activity aims to protect low-lying, flood-prone areas from flooding caused by high tides and heavy rains.
Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said they are currently focused on repairing the navigational gate which was recently damaged again due to a mechanical issue. 
This malfunction has caused flooding, particularly during high tide. With the rainy season approaching, the city government will intensify its safety programs to protect residents. 
She also emphasized that cooperation and unity are crucial to effectively address the situation.
The City Engineering Department (CED) said that the sandbags distributed to several barangays include: 205 bags along the river wall in Gabriel 2 Subdivision near Allan Street; 125 bags along the Talabahan Riverwall near the Talabahan Pumping Station in Barangay Hulong Duhat; 100 bags in Martin Compound, C. Arellano, Barangay Ibaba; 50 bags along the MCM River Wall in Barangay Tañong; and 25 bags along the Asinan Riverwall in Barangay San Agustin.
The initiative is being implemented alongside ongoing city cleanup drives and drainage declogging operations led by the CED and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), targeting main roads, alleys, waterways, and drainage systems.

The local government continues to monitor the situation and has urged residents to stay alert and follow all safety advisories.
Sandoval personally distributed food packs including rice, canned goods, noodles, and coffee, to over 1,000 affected residents of Barangay Hulong Duhat.

The CED expects the repair of the navigational gate to be completed by the second week of June.
“Malabueños, naririto lamang po ang pamahalaang lungsod upang umalalay, lalo na't panahon na ng tag-ulan at inaasahan natin ang pagtaas ng tubig (Malabueños, your city government is here to support you, especially now that the rainy season has begun and rising water levels are expected),” Sandoval said. 
“Kahit nasa pamamahala ng MMDA ang nasirang navigational gate, ang ating pamahalaang lungsod ay patuloy na tumutulong at nagbabantay upang mapabilis ang pagkumpuni nito. Humihingi kami ng inyong pag-unawa, pasensiya, pagtutulungan, at tiwala habang ginagawa natin ang lahat para sa inyong kapakanan (Although the damaged navigational gate is under the management of the MMDA, our city government continues to assist and closely monitor its repair to help speed up the process. We ask for your understanding, patience, cooperation, and trust as we do everything we can for your welfare),” she added.
