The Malabon City government provided aid on Thursday, May 29, to 11 families displaced by a recent fire and over 500 families affected by flooding.

According to the city’s Public Information Office (PIO), the fire-affected families are temporarily sheltered at the Muzon Elementary School Multipurpose Hall.

Each family received food packs containing noodles, canned goods, rice, coffee, and bottled water, along with hygiene kits and sleeping kits.

Modular tents and portable toilets were also provided to ensure the evacuees’ comfort.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) reported that the fire started at 12:55 p.m. and was extinguished by 1:22 p.m. 

Seven houses were burned in the incident, which tragically resulted in one fatality and left two individuals injured.

The mayor also extended her condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them of continued support and assistance.

Sandoval also visited the flood-affected families in Barangay Hulong Duhat covered court where over 500 families received the assistance aid. 

The flooding was caused by a malfunction in the Malabon-Navotas River Navigational Gate operated by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which reportedly experienced mechanical issues.

“We also visited Barangay Hulong Duhat to extend assistance to the families affected by the recent damage to the navigational gate, which is currently under repair by the MMDA,” Sandoval said.

“For our part, the city government is prepared to respond and provide support, especially during the rainy season and high tide, which may cause flooding in the area,” the mayor added. 

Sandoval assured residents that the city government is closely monitoring the operation of 48 pumping stations and 120 floodgates throughout Malabon as part of ongoing flood mitigation efforts. 

The local government also conducted cleanup drives and declogging operations in the area to help prevent flooding.

"In times like these, when flooding and sudden fires can occur, we urge all Malabueños—especially our senior citizens—to immediately coordinate with us to ensure their safety,” the mayor said. 

“Gayundin po ay laging isaalang-alang ang mga dapat tandaan gaya ng pagsiguro na walang naiwan kandilang nakasindi kapag aalis ng bahay, upang hindi magkaroon ng pagmumulan ng ano mang insidente (Likewise, always keep in mind important safety reminders, such as making sure no lit candles are left unattended when leaving the house, to prevent any possible incidents from happening),” she added. 

The city government also reminded residents to follow fire safety precautions, such as never leaving lit candles unattended when leaving the house, avoiding overloaded electrical outlets, keeping flammable items away from children, and preparing an emergency escape plan.
