A South Korean national, who is suspected to be a member of a criminal organization in his country, has been arrested in Pasay City by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
NBI Director Jaime B. Santiago identified him as Jang Seong Woong who was presented to the media on Friday, May 23.
Santiago said Jang was arrested last Thursday, May 22, by joint operatives of the NBI and Bureau of Immigration (BI) in collaboration with the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) and the Philippine Air Force Military Intelligence.
“The arrest was based on an official communication from the Senior Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Bureau of Immigration,” the NBI said.
Based on information from South Korean authorities, the NBI said that Jang is “an undesirable alien who poses a risk to public safety and security due to his status as a fugitive from justice.”
It also said that “an Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) Red Notice has been issued for this individual, following a warrant of arrest from the Daegu District Court for Serious Physical Injury and Kidnapping in violation of the Criminal Act of Korea.”
It added that “Jang, along with fellow gang members, detained and severely assaulted the victim with a baseball bat, resulting in multiple injuries.”
At the same time, the NBI said that based on information from the BI, Jang arrived in the Philippines on May 1, 2017 as a tourist and later sought extensions for his stay.
However, it said the Korean stopped reporting to the BI after his visa extension on Jan 28, 2020.
