Personnel of the Business Permit and Licensing Office enforced the closure order against BMJ Data Processing Services.
The office in Barangay Kasambagan was described as a scam hub in an expose by a YouTuber, a foreign hacker who was able to access the company’s system.
According to the hacker, the company victimized foreigners who were duped into shelling out cash for an investment that turned out to be a scam.
The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7), Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Cebu City Field Unit, and Regional Anti-Cyber Crime Unit-7 implemented the closure order.
A show-cause order was issued after the company was found to have been operating without a mayor's and business permit.
Police Col. Enrico Figueroa, CCPO chief, said they cooperated with the building management for the inspection but no one was in the office when they arrived.
Figueroa said they have already secured the names of all workers for an investigation.
According to a woman who introduced herself as the company’s supervisor, they just rented the office and provided computers but they were not aware of its operations, Figueroa said
“They became suspicious because the activities were not normal. It was noisy inside and it did not appear like an office,” said Figueroa.
Figueroa said they received information that the company ceased operating after the alleged activities were exposed on YouTube.
The region’s anti-cybercrime office will apply for a search warrant from court to enable lawmen to examine the computers and check if the company was involved in scamming activities.
Police Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, PRO-7 chief, warned that such illegal activities online will not be kept for too long.
“We will track down all employees. We already have the list. We will give them time to clear their names that’s why they have to go to CCPO to explain,” said Maranan.
Maranan advised workers to voluntarily show up to avoid criminal charges.
