Kikiam is the dog in a viral video where an intoxicated man in a black shirt hurled it to the ground, causing it to cry out in pain. The incident occurred in Barangay Santolan on Tuesday, May 13.
Prior to the incident, witnesses said the man was drunk and started causing a scene in the area. The dog's owner also said the suspect hit and kicked the dog first, contrary to what the suspect was claiming that Kikiam bit him first.
The incident was immediately reported and responded to by the Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team, which promptly dispatched security forces led by Barangay Councilor Dale Abugadie, in coordination with the police.
On May 14, Kikiam was immediately brought to an emergency veterinary clinic to receive urgent medical attention.
The Barangay Animal Control Team also assisted the pet owner, along with a representative from the Philippine Society for the Humane Treatment of Animals, Inc. (Humane Philippines), in filing an official complaint against the suspect at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Headquarters.
As of Friday, the case is actively being investigated by the PNP Investigation Section. A manhunt operation has also been launched to apprehend the person involved in the abuse.
Meanwhile, the Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team expressed its gratitude to everyone who helped and showed support, especially organizations and advocacy groups such as SAWS (Santolan Animal Welfare Society), Humane Philippines, and PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society).
The team also vowed to remain steadfast in upholding animal welfare and to ensure that those who violate the Animal Welfare Act and local ordinances, such as the Pasig Veterinary Code and the Barangay Santolan Resolution on Responsible Pet Ownership, will be held accountable.
Residents with concerns about animal welfare in the barangay are urged to coordinate with the Barangay Santolan Animal Control Team.
