Marcos tells Cabinet: Prioritize public service

President Marcos has directed his Cabinet to prioritize public service and speed up the implementation of government projects, Malacañang said Friday, May 16, distancing the Executive branch from the ongoing impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said this following reports that circulated on social media on Thursday that Marcos has supposedly told his Cabinet that he does not want the impeachment of the Vice President, and they should focus on public service.

In her press briefing Friday, Castro confirmed that the President has indeed told them to focus on serving the people.

"Totoo pong pinag-utos ng Pangulo na dapat asikasuhin po namin ang trabaho, dapat madaliin po ang pag-i-implement ng mga proyekto na nais niya para sa taong bayan (It’s true that the President ordered us to focus on our work and to fast-track the implementation of projects he wants for the people)," she said

She reiterated that the President would not interfere in the impeachment proceedings.

"Pagdating po sa impeachment, ‘yan po ay nasa kamay na po ng Senado, nasa kamay na rin po ito ng mga prosecutors (When it comes to the impeachment, that is now in the hands of the Senate and the prosecutors)," Castro said.

So hayaan na lang po natin ang proseso na dumaloy nang normal (Let us allow the process to proceed normally)," she added.

In a radio interview on May 15, Castro stressed that the President expects senators to perform their duties with impartiality.

“Ang hiling natin ay gampanan ng mga senador ang kanilang obligasyon, hindi lang para sa isang tao kundi para sa lahat ng taong bayan (Our appeal is for senators to fulfill their obligation—not just to one person, but to all Filipinos),” she said.

She added that there has been no shift in the President’s position since before the elections, emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law.

The impeachment complaint was filed earlier this year against Vice President Duterte over her alleged misuse of confidential funds and remarks perceived to threaten President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

It passed the House of Representatives and awaits trial in the Senate. Marcos has maintained a neutral stance throughout the process.
