- President Marcos has directed the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to study the possibility of increasing the insurance payment coverage for private motor vehicles involved in accidents with PUVs.
- The initiative aims to provide additional protection for individuals who might become victims of negligence or accidents on the road by potentially adopting insurance systems similar to those for PUVs for private motor vehicles.
- The Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Altodap) has highlighted the discrepancy in insurance coverage, where PUV passengers can receive up to P400,000 for fatalities and P100,000 for injuries, while passengers of private vehicles currently have a maximum coverage of only P200,000 to be distributed among all the victims.

Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said the President has already directed Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon to look into the proposal to adopt the insurance system for PUVs to that of private motor vehicles in order to ensure fair benefits claims in cases of death and permanent disability.
Castro said this will be studied thoroughly to determine if it will be just and timely.
"Pinag-aaralang mabuti kung ito ba ay nararapat at ito po ba ay napapanahon (This is being studied to determine whether it is appropriate and timely)," Castro said in a Palace briefing on Wednesday, May 14.
"Ito naman po ay para sa karagdagang protection para sa lahat na maaaring mabiktima ng negligence o aksidente sa kalsada (This is for additional protection for everyone who may fall victim to negligence or accidents on the road)," she added.
The Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Altodap) has urged Marcos to increase the insurance payment coverage under the Compulsory Third Party Liability (CTPL).
The group cited that passengers of private vehicles are at a significant disadvantage because under current regulations, the maximum that can be provided under CTPL is only P200,000.
Based on the existing PUV insurance policy under the Passenger Personal Accident Insurance (PPAI), bus and other PUV passengers are entitled to a maximum of P400,000 for each of the fatalities in cases of road crashes and P100,000 each in cases of injuries.
Altodap said that is not the case for passengers of private motor vehicles since they are only entitled to a maximum of P200,000—to be divided among all the victims.
