DOJ orders probe on 'oil smuggling' of 1 of 3 vessels that sank off Bataan waters

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have been asked to determine if the vessel MKTR Jason Bradley, which sank off the waters of Bataan last July, has been involved in oil smuggling, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Thursday, Sept. 26.

DOJ Undersecretary Raul T. Vasquez revealed the investigation after the PCG reported that the motor tanker has been refloated.

Vasquez said “plano namin is that we give them about a week or two for the Coast Guard and for the NBI to come up with a final report on the examination of the oil that were over there kasi malalaman mo ‘yan kung yaan ba ay mga oil na subject of paihi or smuggling dahil kung walang marking (because we would find out if the oil was subject of smuggling if it was determined there was no marking)."

“Sa batas kasi n’yan lahat ng mga properly documented at nagbabayad ng mga custom duties and tariffs ng imported items like oil meron nilalagay silang marker ang Bureau of Customs (Under the law, properly documented imported items that pay custom duties and tariffs have markers placed by the Bureau of Customs),” he explained.

 “Kung wala ‘yuon that is an indication na pumasok ‘yan improperly or unlawfully (The oil entered the country improperly or unlawfully if it doesn’t have the markings),” he pointed out.

The MKTR Jason Bradley is one of three ships that sank off the waters of Bataan last July and caused oil spills. The other two vessels are the MT Terranova and MV Mirola.

Vasquez said the investigation on the possible oil smuggling committed by the three vessels is just part of the overall investigation.

“Hindi namin dinidiscount lahat ng aspetong ‘yan at kung meron naman makita na wala naman smuggling e ‘di wala (We don’t discount all of the aspects during the investigation and if no smuggling was found then there is none),” he said.

 “Magfile tayo ng nararapat na kaso na suportado ng ebidensya. Hindi naman ho tayo naghahanap ng wala (We will file cases that are supported by evidence. We are not looking for nothing),” he added.
