Flooding displaces 409 individuals in Davao region


DAVAO CITY – The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD)-Davao region said on Friday, September 20, that 139 families or 409 persons in the Davao region were affected by the flooding incident on Wednesday, September 18, caused by heavy rains from the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”

Rains expected in huge areas of Luzon

The agency said that certain areas in Barangay Astorga in Santa Cruz town, Davao del Sur and five barangays in Davao City were inundated. 

It said that the flooding occurred at 6:12 p.m. in Barangay Astorga and over an hour later at 7:38 p.m., flooding was also monitored in different barangays in Davao City – Bucana, Matina Crossing, Matina Aplaya, Talomo Proper, and Maa.

The OCD-Davao added that the habagat, the weather system affecting several parts of the country, brought strong winds, causing rough seas in Purok Kimsan, Ilangay in Davao Oriental on Tuesday, September 17.

A power interruption was reported in Jose Abad Santos town in Davao Occidental province and the municipalities of Gov. Generoso and Lupon in Davao Oriental. Electricity was restored as of September 19, OCD-Davao said.

The agency said the habagat damaged four houses in Davao Occidental and six houses in Davao Oriental.

On Thursday, September 12, strong wind and heavy rain were experienced in Barangay Salaysay in Marilog District, Davao City, and  Barangays Butukan and Malalan in Jose Abad Santos.
