BuCor modifies training to attract more physicians, nurses, pharmacists, teachers, guidance counselors
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has decided to modify its training courses to attract recruits with high technical qualifications like physicians, nurses, pharmacists, teachers, guidance counselors, and priests.
Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that BuCor has only 10 doctors including one who is set to retire this year and two who will retire next year.
With around 53,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in its prison facilities, Catapang said the ideal ratio should be one doctor for every 700 PDLs, Catapang said.
He said he has already ordered the modification of the training courses to attract more recruits.
Applicants with highly technical qualifications will undergo only 45-days of executive training courses, insread of tedious physical activities, in six months, he also said.
The training includes orienting them to BuCor mandates, missions, vision as well as discussion on prison rules and regulations, duties and responsibilities of their ranks including the regimented nature of work under the uniformed service, he added.
“With regard to hair cuts, they will no longer be required to sport military hair cut, but instead, will be allowed to wear short hair,” he assured.
He also said that the salaries being offered by the bureau for technical positions are very competitive since it ranges from P29,668 to P91,058 per month plus the salary increase announced by President Marcos.
