Santa Rosa City lone district Rep. Dan Fernandez has branded Vice President Sara Duterte's security detail--which is reportedly composed of nearly 400 soldiers--as "excessive" and "somehow irrational".
Fernandez had this to say in a press conference Wednesday, Aug. 7, wherein he highlighted the limited manpower of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
"Mayroon tayong 150,000 na AFP eh kung titignan niyo yung inyong records and statistics (We have 150,000 members of the AFP if you check your records and statistics)," said the solon, who chairs the House Committee on Public Order and Safety.
Out of the over 7,000 islands of the Philippine archipelago, some 2,000 islands are inhabited, said Fernandez.
"At kung 2,000 ay inhabited ng tao, di ba, at mayroon tayong 150,000 na sundalo, kung i-scattered mo yan doon sa 2,000 Islands mayroon tayong 75 soldiers na naka-assign lamang sa bawat isla," he said.
(And if 2,000 islands are inhabited by people, and we have 150,000 soldiers, you can assign 75 soldiers per island of you scatter them.)
"Having said that, kung mayroon si VP Sara na 400 na sundalo na naka-assign sa kanya, at mayroon tayong 75 soldiers sa bawat Isla (If VP Sara has 400 soldiers assigned to her and we can allocate 75 soldiers per island), I think that is excessive and that is somehow irrational," Fernandez noted.

"Being a public official, we must be prudent to see the budget of our government. We have to maximize, and the work of the AFP is the external threats," he pointed out.
At any rate, the Laguna congressman said Vice President Duterte should just thank the Marcos administration for the level of her security.
"I hope na siguro yung 400 na bigay sa kanya (I hope that regarding the 400 that was given to her), I think she has to be thankful to the government "
