Enrollment soars to 23.8 million: DepEd reports only 42 schools with postponed opening of classes
While the opening of over 40 schools remained postponed on Monday, Aug. 5, the basic education enrollment in both public and private schools has reached 23.8 million during the second week of classes for School Year (SY) 2024-2025, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Data provided by Media Relations Chief Dennis Legaspi shows that 42 schools have yet to start their classes. These schools are located in the Schools Division Office of Malabon City in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Meanwhile, DepEd reports a continued increase in enrollment for this SY.
As of 9 a.m., DepEd’s Enrollment Monitoring Report for SY 2024-2025 shows that the total number of enrollees in formal and informal education has reached 23,845,025.
This number, according to DepEd, represents 86.01 percent of its target enrollment of 27,722,835 for this SY.
DepEd noted that the total enrollment covers public and private schools as well as the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
According to DepEd’s data, 20,859,109 students are enrolled in public schools, while 2,666,903 learners are in private schools.

In State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) offering basic education, there are 38,277 learners currently enrolled for this school year.
Enrollment in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) has also reached 280,736.
Meanwhile, elementary students make up the highest number of enrollees across levels and sectors of education, with 13,234,374, followed by Junior High School (JHS) with 7,011,942 and Senior High School (SHS) with 3,317,973.
Across regions, Calabarzon has the highest number of enrollees so far with 3,464,861, followed by Central Luzon with 2,528,831, and the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,721,998 enrollees.
In SY 2023-2024, DepEd reported that enrollment reached 27,693,125.
Except in schools severely affected by Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon, SY 2024-2025 officially started in public schools nationwide on July 29.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the opening of SY 2024-2025 was orderly in the schools he visited.
