Phivolcs records magnitude 6.2 aftershock in Surigao del Sur


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 6.2-magnitude offshore aftershock in Surigao del Sur on Saturday, Aug. 3.

With a depth of focus of two kilometers, Phivolcs reported that the tectonic tremor occurred at 12:20 p.m., 84 kilometers east of Lingig town.

According to the latest bulletin issued by Phivolcs, the quake was strong (Intensity V) in Lingig and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.

It was moderately strong (Intensity IV) in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; Monkayo, Davao de Oro; and weak (Intensity III) in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur.

The aftershock was also slightly felt (Intensity II) in Magsaysay, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, and was scarcely perceptible (Intensity I) in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur, and Cagayan de Oro City.

The initial bulletin on this aftershock issued by Phivolcs reported a magnitude of 6.1.

It was detected 90 kilometers east of Lingig town with a depth of focus of 10 kilometers.

This quake followed a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck 66 kilometers off the coast of Lingig earlier this morning.

Phivolcs said no damage and no aftershocks are expected.
