The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Surigao del Sur on Saturday, Aug. 3.
In an advisory, Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at 6:22 a.m. It hit 66 kilometers north of the municipality of Lingig.
The earthquake was tectonic in origin with a depth of focus of 9 km, Phivolcs said.
Various parts of Mindanao felt the intensities. Intensity V (strong) was recorded in Lingig, Surigao del Sur; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; and the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Moderately strong (Intensity IV) shaking was felt in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro, and the City of Davao.
The quake was recorded at Intensity III (weak) in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Inabanga, Bohol; and the City of Baybay, Leyte.
The quake was also slightly felt (Intensity II) in Mambajao, Camiguin; Sogod, Southern Leyte; the City of Cotabato; and Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.
While aftershocks may follow the quake, Phivolcs said “no damage” is expected.
No tsunami alert was issued due to the quake, Phivolcs added.
