Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental police, said the 70-year-old victim was inside his house when a portion of the segregated river control collapsed due to flooding caused by heavy rains since late Monday afternoon.
The victim drowned when his house made of light materials was swept away by raging floodwater.
Rescuers arrived but the victim, who was reportedly alone, had been removed by his neighbors from the area and brought to his sister’s house.
He said that 131 individuals in the barangay were evacuated.
Polinar said that a bridge in the barangay collapsed after raining for several days that may have contributed to severe flooding.
He said that evacuees left the evacuation center at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 9, and returned to their homes.
Polinar said that floodwater has subsided but assessment of the situation is ongoing.
