2,451 PDLs acquitted of criminal charges since June 2022 freed by BuCor
A total of 2,451 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who had been acquitted of their criminal charges had been released by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) since June 2022.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that most of the PDLs suffered many years in jail only to be acquitted and, thus, subsequently released from detention.
He cited the case of Gideon Senarosa who was released on Sept. 7, 2023 after his detention since June 30, 1995 on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Due to these incidents, Catapang lauded the approval of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for allowing the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) to hire 178 more lawyers.
“It is a welcome move to augment the overworked PAO lawyers and this will mean more lawyers who can assist not only PDLs but also other underprivileged and disadvantage members of the society,” he said.
Catapang also welcomed the moves of the Department of Justice (DOJ) to decongest BuCor prisons.
“Ang BuCor nakakapagpalaya ng 500 to 1,000 PDLs monthly, yan yung mga acquitted, sentence served, paroled pero may mga darating naman doble o mas marami pa sa pinalaya namin, kaya talaga itong ginagawa ng DOJ ay napaka laking tulong sa amin (The BuCor frees between 500 to 1,000 PDLs every month including those acquitted, sentenced served, paroled but the new inmates entering the prisons double the number or more and that’s why what the DOJ is doing is a big help,” he said.
