DOJ starts releasing survivorship benefits to families of deceased prosecutors
At least 25 qualified beneficiaries of deceased prosecutors have started to receive their survivorship benefits, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Tuesday, July 23.
In a statement, the DOJ said it has started the release of the survivorship benefits to the beneficiaries last Monday, July 22, covering the benefits from January 1 to July 31, 2024.
The DOJ, however, did not release the names of the beneficiaries and the amounts given to them.
In October 2023, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla signed the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act (RA) No. 11643, the Act Granting Survivorship Benefits to the Surviving Legitimate Spouse and Dependent Children of a Deceased Retired Member of the National Prosecution Service (NPS) and Appropriating Funds Therefor.
"We always address our fellow workers in the DOJ as 'family.’ Justice dictates that we materialize the same by extending our respect, love and support to their orphaned family members,” Remulla said.
“Our commitment to honoring our prosecutors goes beyond life, considering they have sacrificed so much in the administration of the criminal justice system,” he added.
He pointed out that the grant of benefits “reflects the unwavering efforts of the Marcos administration to provide an adequate and just compensation to government prosecutors whose duties and functions were filled with so much stress and risk.”
