The Department of Education (DepEd) confirmed on Monday, July 15, that the turnover ceremony to pave the way for the new leadership will take place later this week.
In an advisory, DepEd announced that the turnover rites will be held on July 18 at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, Central Office.
With the turnover, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara is also expected to formally assume his post as Secretary of the DepEd. He will succeed Vice President Sara Duterte, who resigned from her position as Education Secretary on June 19.
Duterte’s resignation will be effective on July 19, the same day Angara’s term becomes effective.

Meanwhile, DepEd has yet to confirm if Duterte will attend the turnover ceremony.
In a radio interview on July 14, Angara said he plans to ask Duterte for any “advice” on matters related to DepEd and the basic education sector in general.
Angara said he is expecting a meeting with Duterte before the turnover ceremony.
“Kung may chance, hihingi rin ako ng advice ng ating Vice President dito sa kanyang karanasan sa nakaraang dalawang taon niya bilang pinuno o kalihim ng kagawaran ng edukasyon (If there is a chance, I will also ask the VP for advice about her experience in the last two years as chief or secretary of education),” Angara said.
As part of the preparation for the school opening for School Year (SY) 2024-2025 on July 29, Angara noted in the same interview that he met with the agency’s undersecretaries and assistant secretaries.
He also disclosed that some officials of the agency had “resigned” before his takeover.
DepEd has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
