Improve mental health and find your 'furever' friend at this mall's pet adoption drive

A slumber pawty to remember

Do you know that sleeping with pets can be good for both pets and owners? “There are numerous benefits when pets and furbabies sleep together especially when it comes to mental health,” says AKF shelter Veterinarian Dr. Ashley Arthur Descanzo. He adds that sleeping with pets decreases depression and loneliness among humans and substitutes it with the warmth of companionship.

Dr. Descanzo points out that owners and pets tend to sleep better when snoozing together. A collection of researches proved that during sleep, oxytocin is being released, a hormone which reduces stress and helps you achieve a good night’s sleep.

“I encourage pet parents to sleep next to their pets, but at the end of the day, the decision is up to them. Regardless of the breed, a cat or a dog is a good sleeping buddy as long as it is well-trained. It is the pet owner’s responsibility to understand and recognize their pets’ behavior and identify signs of discomfort and even aggression,” he emphasized.

Pet owners might also want to consider their health status such as allergies that might be triggered. Though based on studies, kids sleeping with pets can help lower their risk of developing severe allergies through early exposure to allergens.
