Manila 6th district Rep. Bienvenido "Benny" Abante Jr. has advised Filipinos not to allow the election victory of politicians who don't believe in human rights.
Abante issued this poignant appeal Tuesday afternoon, June 25 during the tail end of the House Committee on Human Rights' hearing on the alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) committed during the previous Duterte administration's bloody war on illegal drugs.
As the hearing progressed, it was reported that Vice President Sara Duterte had revealed that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte; and siblings Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte were eyeing a senatorial run.
‘Wag nating hayaang manalo ang mga pulitiko na hindi naniniwala sa human rights (Let's not allow politicians who don't believe in human rights to win)," said Abante, chairman of the committee. He didn't mention any particular individual.
"Kinakailangan po ang manalong pulitiko meron pong passion sa Pilipino, ang mga pulitiko na mananalo ay naniniwala po sa due process and law, hindi po kaagad kumikitil o pumapatay," said Abante, a pastor preacher.
(Those who must win are politicians with a passion for Filipinos, those who believe in the due process of law, and don't have a penchant for killing.)
The mid-term elections will take place in May 2025.
"Naniniwala po na ang bawat Pilipino, anuman ang kanyang kalagayan, may karapatan sa mundong ito, mga kaibigan. I hope na sana po ay makinig po kayo sa amin ngayon, sapagkat elections po next year," added the veteran solon from Manila.

On Tuesday, the Abante panel formalized its invitation to the Duterte patriarch so the latter may attend a future hearing and face the relatives of the EJK victims.
Abante admitted to being moved by the testimonies of the EJK victims' kin, and reckoned that the former president should hear them too.
Depending on who you ask, the Duterte drug war claimed the lives of anywhere from 6,000 to over 10,000 drug suspects.
