Manila 6th district Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. shared his big realization on Tuesday, June 25 regarding former president Rodrigo Duterte's vaunted war against illegal drugs.
Abante said the Duterte drug war was ultimately a "deceitful" one.
The pastor-congressman came up with this conclusion amid the House Committee on Human Rights' investigation on the alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) committed during the previous administration's aggressive anti-narcotics campaign.
"Realizing what has happened, palagay ko maniniwala na ako na (I think I will believe that) the war on drugs is quite deceitful, oo. Why po deceitful? Sapagkat hanggang ngayon marami pang drugs eh. Hanggang ngayon hindi pa natatapos ‘yan," said Abante, the committee chairman.
(Because up to now, there are still a lot of drugs. Up to now, it continues.)
One of the biggest promises of then-president Duterte was total eradication of illegal drugs in the country within his first three to six months in office.
The tough-talking president kept on extending his own deadline up until the end of his six-year term in Malacañang, which ended on June 30, 2022.
Abante said Duterte's direct successor, President Marcos, has fared better than the Mindanaoan.
"Eh ang kagandahan lang po ngayon sa bagong administrasyon na ito, in the last two years, walang napatay, meron din naman pero kakaunti lamang, at nakakuha tayo ng tonelada ng mga drugs sa iba’t ibang lugar sa Pilipinas," he said.
(What's good night now under this new administration is that in the last two years, nobody was killed, rather there's very few killed, and yet we seize tons of drugs from different parts of the country.)
Depending on who you ask, the Duterte drug war claimed the lives of between 6,000 to over 10,000 drug suspects.
