Acquittal of De Lima 'is proof of working justice system' -- Sec Remulla
The acquittal of former senator Leila M. de Lima on her last illegal drugs case "is proof of the country's working justice system under the Bagong Pilipinas governance," Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said on Wednesday, June 26.
De Lima had been acquitted by the Muntinlupa City regional trial court (RTC) which granted her demurrer to evidence based on the weakness of the prosecution's evidence on her case.
She had also been acquitted in two other criminal cases. The third case was filed on allegations that she received around P70 million in earnings from illegal drugs trading at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
As a result of the filing of the three cases during the past administration, De Lima was detained for more than seven years.
“The rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are fundamental principles that underpin democratic governance and the protection of human rights highly prioritized under the Bagong Pilipinas brand of governance,” Remulla said.
With the court ruling, Remulla expressed hope that “the conclusion of these proceedings will allow healing and the continuation of constructive dialogue on matters of justice and human rights.”
For its part, Remulla said the Department of Justice (DOJ) will “continue to uphold the principles of the rule of law, human rights, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.”
“It will remain committed to strengthening the justice system and upholding democratic values," he also said.
