Focus on cybercrime is top priority of new NBI Director Santiago
Newly appointed National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime B. Santiago said on Friday, June 14, he will lead the bureau's focus on cybercrimes.
“Pupukpok kami sa cybercrime. Ang dami na nating mga scam (We will focus on cybercrimes. We have so many scams),” Santiago told journalists at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Santiago, a retired Manila trial court judge and a well known sharpshooter when he was still a police officer of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of the Manila police, was at the DOJ to make a courtesy call after being sworn to office by Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin as NBI director.
At the DOJ, Santiago met with top officials led by Undersecretary Raul Vasquez who gave him marching orders as the new NBI director.
“As much as possible, pagandahin pa ang serbisyo ng NBI, tiwala ng tao ibalik (improve further services of the NBI and restore public trust in the agency),” Santiago said about the marching orders to him.
Santiago took over the post from NBI Director Medardo De Lemos whose term of office was extended last year.
He said he will start officially his work at the NBI on Tuesday, June 18, since June 17 if a holiday being the day of Eid al-Adha or Feast of Sacrifice.
He also said he will meet with De Lemos on Tuesday for a smooth transition in the leadership at the law enforcement agency.
