In its latest forecast, PAGASA Weather Specialist Daniel James Villamil noted a "high chance" of cloudy conditions and scattered rain showers due to the southwest monsoon, known locally as "habagat," in the area of Occidental Mindoro.

"Sa nalalabing bahagi ng Luzon, including Metro Manila, ay generally fair weather conditions na ating mararanasan ngayong araw at ngayong madaling araw pa lamang, may mga thunderstorm activity na tayo na itala sa bahagi ng Greater Metro Manila areas (For the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, generally fair weather conditions will be experienced today. However, early this morning, we have already recorded thunderstorm activity in parts of the Greater Metro Manila area)," Villamil said.

The weather specialist explained that these thunderstorms are expected to be "temporary," as the area may still experience hot and humid weather from morning until noon.

"However, from afternoon until evening, let's bring an umbrella because there is a possibility of thunderstorm activity again," he said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Effect of 'habagat' in VisMin continues

Meanwhile, as forecasted on June 14, the western portion of the country, particularly over the western sections of Visayas and Mindanao, continued to experience the effects of the southwest monsoon.

"Specifically, today, we will experience scattered rain showers with thunder and lightning in areas such as Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, the entire Western Visayas, the Zamboanga Peninsula, and the islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi," Villamil said.

"For the rest of the country, including Metro Manila, the weather will generally be as expected, except for chances of localized thunderstorms," he added.

The weather specialist then emphasized that starting on Sunday, the rain showers brought by the southwest monsoon in the western sections of Mindanao will gradually decrease over the next three to five days.
