After two years of going online, a one-year hiatus then several creator-centric events, Komikon is back with the highly anticipated Summer Komikon 2024! As the Philippines' longest-running local komiks convention, Komikon has been a cornerstone of the local comics community for the past 19 years. This year, the event returns to one of its beloved venues, SM Megamall's Megatrade Hall 3, at Level 5 of Building B, on May 25 to 26, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m to 8 p.m.
Summer Komikon is a convention that champions local comics and their creators with support from the community and other creatives. It is an inclusive platform that embraces all aspects connected to comics by bringing together various stakeholders in the industry, from self-publishing creators to local publishers, creative service providers, retailers who support local products, collector communities, creator groups advocating for the advancement of the medium, and avid readers.
Highlighting this year's event are four esteemed local creators as Special Guests:
Russell Molina: Acclaimed children's book author and graphic fictionist, co-creator of "Sixty Six Books 1 & 2," "12:01" (2022 Filipino Readers' Choice Winner), and 2023 National Book Awardee, "Josefina."
Gab Chee Kee: Writer of popular komiks titles like "Mang Jose," "eJuan," and "Tanod" and renowned guitarist for Parokya ni Edgar Ace Enriquez: Co-creator of "Bathala: Apokalypsis," "Mang Jose," "Ang Superhero-ng Naniningil," and "Engkanto-4-Hire." Ed Padilla: Creator of the comic strip "Ang Tindahan ni Mang Ed." and proud officer-member of the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas (SKP).
These special guests will be available at their tables throughout the event to sell and sign their books.
On the stage, have the opportunity to engage with our special guests during panel discussions on their creative processes and the genesis of their titles, followed by a Q&A session. Expect On-The-Spot Challenges throughout the weekend to win awesome giveaways. Winners of the various contests including the Comic Creation Contest: A Philippine Isekai will also be announced and awarded.
In addition to the special guests, attendees can explore a vibrant array of comic book exhibitors featuring local comics creators launching new titles and selling fan favorites. Chapter 1 by Ardee Arollado of Cosmic Cube Comics, Zugbo Chronicles, Wakeup Knight by Zeempleng Tao, Ang Alamat ng Chismis by Marcushiro of National Gulaman Authority, Enchantment by Hansel Dimapilis, Point Break Mall by Chuck Llanto, I Ship Everyone except for me?! by Chocnut-san, Tigray and Friends by Ray Magbanua of RAYKOSEN Studio and Carpool: Last Stop by Syeri.
Komiks Kalye, the event's artist alley, will showcase top-notch international illustrators, such as Mico Suayan (DC Joker/Haley: Criminal Sanity Black Label Series, & Bloodshot: Reborn), Carlo Pagulayan (Superman:Lost, Red She-Hulk: Hell Hath No Fury, Hulk: Planet Hulk, Batman, Deathstroke), Stephen Segovia (The Scorched, Spawn's Universe, WILDC.A.T.s, Superior carnage, Action Comics), and Jethro Morales (Xmen (Fall of House of X) #4, Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #42, Star Wars: High Republic- The Blade). Get your comics signed and sketches done at Komiks Kalye on May 26, Sunday, from 1 p.m to 6 p.m.
