DepEd confirms deaths of students in South Cotabato, Iloilo

The Department of Education (DepEd) confirmed the recent deaths of two learners in South Cotabato and Iloilo and reiterated its call to all concerned to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

‘Murder’ in Tupi
DepEd condemned the “murder” of a 10-year-old learner in Tupi, South Cotabato as she was heading home from school.
“There is simply no place for such brutality in our society,” the agency said in a statement. “We reiterate our call to local authorities to strengthen efforts in ensuring the safety and security in our communities,” it added.
DepEd also extended its “deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and classmates of the victim during this time of grief.”
The agency also thanked the Philippine National Police (PNP) for its “immediate response in pursuing the suspected perpetrator.”
Death in Iloilo
In a separate statement, DepEd said it is also mourning the death of a Grade 10 learner of Maasin, Iloilo.
The learner from an unidentified school, DepEd said, “sadly passed away” last May 10.
“We appeal to the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed narratives as a sign of respect for the family in this time of grief,” DepEd said.
As it awaits the official police report and findings related to the student’s death, DepEd said that the Child Protection Committee (CPC) of the said school was set to “conduct psychosocial interventions for affected peers and teachers close to the said learner.”
The concerned school, DepEd said, was also instructed to “coordinate with the appropriate authorities” in the matter.
