Speaker Martin Romualdez says it might no longer be possible to hold a special election for the seat left by the late Cavite 4th district Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. in the House of Representatives.

In an impromptu press briefing Monday afternoon, April 29, Romualdez noted that the May 2025 elections were just a year away, therefore a special poll to fill in Barzaga's vacated seat in the interim might be out of the question.

"Siyempre (Of course) we can also act as the caretaker for the district," said Romualdez, leader of the 300-plus strong chamber.

"Kaya malapit na ang eleksiyon, one more year prior to the election kaya hindi na tayo pwedeng magkaroon tayo ng special election (The elections are near, one more year prior to the election, thats why we can no longer have a special election).

"So we will have a caretaker for the district for the time being," he said.
