House adopts measure expressing 'profound condolences' to family of late Barzaga

The House of Representatives adopted during plenary session Monday, April 29 a resolution pressing the chamber's "profound condolences" to the family of the late Cavite 4th district Rep. Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. 

Adopted on the same day it was filed was House Resolution (HR) No.1691. 

The measure was Introduced by House Speaker and Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez, Senior Deputy Speaker Pampanga 3rd district Rep. Aurelio "Dong" Gonzales Jr., Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David "Jay-Jay" Suarez, Majority Leader Zamboanga City 2nd district Rep. Mannix Dalipe, Senior Deputy Majority Leader Ilocos 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos, and Committee on Accounts Chairperson Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez. 

Barzaga, 74, passed away on Saturday afternoon (Philippine Time), April 27 in California, United States (US). It was in late October 2023 when the veteran lawmaker flew stateside for a heart surgery. 

In their resolution, the House leader described Barzaga as "a wel-respected certified public accountant (CPA) and lawyer". 

The Dasmariñas City native was also well-loved by his House colleagues and members of the media.

"Honorable Barzaga is survived by his spouse, Dasmariñhas City Mayor Jennifer Austria-Barzaga and their sons, Francisco, Elpidio Ill and Lorenzo," read HR No.1691. 

Monday was the first session day following Congress' five-week summer break. 

During plenary session, which presided by Romualdez himself, Dalipe moved for the adoption of HR No.1691, in consolidation of with HR No.1692--a similar measure filed Parañaque City 2nd district Rep. Gus Tambunting. 

The two measures were promptly adopted by Romualdez after nobody from plenary objected.
