Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua wants to address the elephant in the room when it comes to Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a scathing statement Saturday, April 20, Chua called out the Vice President and concurrent Department of Education (DepEd) chief for her silence on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issue between the Philippines and China.
"VP Duterte has been woefully silent as our sovereignty and national patrimony in the West Philippine Sea and EEZ have been challenged with ship blockades and aggressive maneuvers against our fisherfolk, Coast Guard, BFAR (Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources), and NAMRIA (National Mapping and Resource Information Authority)," the solon said.
Chua was obviously referring to the China Coast Guard's (CCG) aggressive actions in the WPS, which include harassing Philippine boats that are on resupply missions to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.
The Chinese vessels do so by firing water cannons at the much-smaller resupply boats. This endangers both the cargo and the crew of the boats.
BRP Sierra Madre serves as the Philippines' outpost in Ayungin Shoal, which is within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
