Bataan 1st district Rep. Geraldine Roman says its "political suicide" for a politician to push for political amendments to the 1987 Constitution at this point.

Speaking in a press conference Monday, March 4, Roman once again assured her Senate counterparts that the House is only after economic amendments to the existing Charter via the ongoing discussions on Resolution of Both Houses (RBH) No.7.

“Paulit-ulit naman po naming pinapangako sa ating mga kaibigan sa Senado na talagang what you see is what you get. We have RBH No.7 at ito po ay purely economic provisions,” said the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality chairperson.

(We have repeatedly vowed to our friends in the Senate that what you see is what you get.)

The House's RBH No.7 was lifted from the Senate's own RBH No.6. Both seek revisions to the economic provisions of the existing Charter as a way to attract more foreign direct investments (FDIs) to the Philippines.

“Well, from a political point of view, it will be political suicide for any politician na magsisingit pa siya ng mga political amendments (who will insert political amendments)," Roman said.

"I mean no politician in his right mind would actually try or even attempt to introduce political amendments when for the longest time we have been assuring our friends in the Senate na (that) we are only interested in amending the economic provisions,” she added.

Moreover, she said that both President Marcos and the leader of the House, Speaker Martin Romualdez, have been very clear that they're only after economic amendments.

Roman emphasized the importance of rationality over irrational fears.

“So trust us, trust us. And you know what? It’s not good to operate on the basis of irrational fears eh,” she said.
