Sophie Ellis-Bextor's hit "Murder on the Dancefloor" is currently shooting for icon status, if it isn’t already, with its remarkable resurgence.
Initially penned by Gregg Alexander (the same guy who wrote “Someday We’ll Know” and “Lost Stars'') “Murder On The Dancefloor” was initially intended to be a track for a New Radicals follow up album that Alexander ditched. A song demo eventually found its way to Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who finished Alexander’s initial lyric draft demo, turning it into a compelling lyrical dance floor drama, and then included it in her 2001 debut album titled “Read My Lips.”
With “Murder On The Dancefloor,” Ellis-Bextor eventually became one of the U.K.’s best pop imports of the early aughts. The 80’s pop sensibilities and infectious electronic dancefloor vibe of the track earned the singer and song a UK chart No.2 position. And with a handful of other Top 10 U.K. singles, such as the electro-tinged swing of “Take Me Home (A Girl Like Me)” and “Lover” from the same album, Ellis-Bextor enjoyed the first decade of the aughts as a pop diva.
Now, more than 20 years since it first came out, the popularity of “Murder On The Dancefloor” skyrocketed once more after its inclusion in the cult movie Saltburn, with the song reaching the summit of the Dance Charts once again, even reclaiming its original peak position on the UK Singles Chart and even making its debut at the Hot 100 charts in the U.S., marking a historic moment in Ellis-Bextor's career, who’s now returned to the pop charts after her last appearance since 2007.
Fast forward to 2024, “Murder On The Dancefloor” is still enjoying its time in the spotlight. A new remix of the track was released just last February, and the song is still hot in the charts. More importantly, it has become this unceasing source of good vibes for every other pop listener and us. Sophie Ellis-Baxter for sure is thanking that well-placed spot on Saltburn. It also proves that the song may be old, but the groove is eternal.
Speaking of groove, Miley Cyrus is back and joining forces with Pharrell Williams for their latest single, "Doctor (Work It Out)." Written by Miley, Pharrell and Michael Pollack (Maroon 5, Jonas Bros., Kelly Clarkson among others) and produced by Pharrell, “Doctor (Work It Out)." was initially written for Miley’s 2013 “Bangerz” album but didn’t make the final track-list. Picked up again by Miley and Pharrell, the song debuted during Pharrell's stint at the Louis Vuitton for Paris Fashion Week 2024.
An unbelievably fit, slender, big-haired, and tattooed Miley is seen sashaying solo in the song’s new music video. And with good reason, as the track is indeed an ass-mover. The track certainly has that Pharrell vibe going for it, in fact as Miley hits the repeating lyrical hook of ‘let me work it out,’ we got Pharrell working that “Blurred Lines” beat. But not too long though as the song modulates into a new section that feels like another track. Punctuated by a pedal steel slide, what ultimately sells this track is Miley who has style, glamour for days with just a hint of badassery.
Play both tracks back-to-back on repeat guarantees to get anyone out of the early week doldrums.
