Muntinlupa City plans to turn 'historic sites' in Bilibid into 'tourist spots'
The Muntinlupa City local government has plans to turn into tourist spots several historic sites at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in the city.
Listed by the Mutinlupa City Tourism, Culture and Arts Department as historic sites within NBP are:
-- Kiyosi Oshawa Shrine/Memorial for Peace Shrine whichwas erected in honor for the contribution of Japanese Kiyosi Osawa
-- Jamboree Lake which was described as the smallest lake in the Philippines
-- Director’s Quarters which is the official residence of the BuCor director general
-- Lethal injection and Death Chamber
-- Japanese Cemetery which was dedicated to the Japanese Soldiers who died in Muntinlupa
-- Memorial Hill which is the burial site of Major Eriberto B. Misa Sr. who has been the longest serving Bureau of Prisons (now Bureau of Corrections) director
Muntinlupa City Mayor Rozzano Rufino “Ruffy” B. Biazon conveyed the plan of the city government during a meeting held Monday, March 25, at the BuCor headquarters with Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. and Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Deo L. Marco.
During the meeting, BuCor said that Biazon informed about “the city government’s plan to include some of the historical sites inside the New Bilibid Prison Compound in its efforts to drum up the tourism industry in the area as part of its economic recovery.”
Biazon said that “‘pag sinabing Muntinlupa ang nasa isip ng tao bilibid (Bilibid is the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about Muntinlupa), so we want to push this initiative not just to boost the economy, but also to let the people know that NBP is a place of reformation and peace.”
BuCor said that the Muntinlupa City local government unit (LGU) has already finished a draft memorandum of agreement on the Bilibid’s historic sites that will be signed with the BuCor.
Also present during the meeting were other officials including BuCor Deputy Director General for Operations Gil Torralba; Sara Bendana of the Muntinlupa Tourism,Culture, and Arts Department; and Councillor Jonas Angelo Abadilla who is also the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President.
