200 PDLs transferred to Leyte Prison to decongest Bilibid -- BuCor
A total of 200 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) had been transferred to the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP) in the continuing efforts to decongest the overcrowded New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
In a statement issued on Friday, March 22, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said the transferred PDLs arrived at LRP in Abuyog town last March 9,
“The movement and transfer of PDLs from the NBP is part of the Master Decongestion Plan of BuCor led by Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr.," it said.
“Upon the arrival of the newly transferred PDL, proper turn-over procedures such as accounting and inspection were administered by the duty officers and other security personnel headed by C/CInsp. Ricardo R. Sespene, Jr., deputy superintendent for Security and Operations of LRP,” it also said.
“C/Supt. Alfredo A. Devaras, Jr., Superintendent, LRP assures that these newly turned-over PDLs will be safe-kept and will undergo the necessary reformation programs in this prison,” it added.
Last Feb. 8, 200 NBP's PDLs were also transferred to LRP.
BuCor records show that 3,259 PDLs from the NBP and the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City have been transferred to other prison facilities from June 2022 to January 2024.
Those transferred were relocated to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF) in Davao del Norte, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro, and the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan, BuCor said.
