Vehicle of BuCor Chief Catapang shot at Skyway

A vehicle owned by Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. was fired upon Tuesday morning, March 19, while on the way to pick up a ranking corrections official in Quezon City.

The bureau said in a statement that Catapang’s Toyota Hilux with plate number WDQ-811 was fired upon by unknown assailants while on its way to pick up BuCor Deputy Director General Al Perreras.

“Catapang said that both he and Perreras have been receiving death threats since they implemented various reforms in the agency and this incident will not deter them from continuing what they started,” BuCor said in a statement.

“Perreras refused to comment at the moment,” it added.

BuCor said the incident took place at around 6:30 a.m, along the Skyway while the vehicle was on its way to pick up Perreras.

Neither Catapang nor Perreras was aboard the vehicle when the shooting took place, it said.

At that time of the incident, the bullet-proof vehicle was being driven by security escort CO1 Cornelio Colalong who was accompanied by fellow security escort CO1 Leonardo Cabaniero.

Based on initial reports, BuCor said that “unidentified suspects on board a gray Toyota Vios suddenly overtake the Innova back up car driven by CSO2 Edwin Berroya and fellow security escort CO2 Michael Magsanoc and fired upon the Hilux.”

“The vehicle was hit at the rear windshield which shattered the bullet proof glass without penetration but the trajectory of the bullet was towards the passenger front side of the vehicle where Perreras usually sits,” it said.

“Luckily, Cabaniero who he was seated at the back of the driver was not hit,” it added.

It said that after the shooting incident, the suspect's car “immediately drove away at the Nagtahan exit of the Skyway.”

It also said the incident was reported to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
