24 PDLs freed from Iwahig Prison in Palawan

Twenty-four persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) have been released from the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Tuesday, March 19.

Those released last March 15 had served their jail terms with their credits under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) law, BuCor said.

GCTA under Republic Act 10592 gives credits to a PDL for good behavior during his or her period of detention.

“The release of PDLs is in response to the directive of BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. to exert efforts and dedication in fast-tracking the pertinent documents to facilitate releases of qualified PDLs based on the rules of RA 10592," BuCor said.

“All of the released PDLs received transportation allowance from the bureau and additional assistance from DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development) through the coordination of the IPPF–External Affairs Section (EAS)," it said.

Last February, 706 PDLs were released from various prison and penal farms of BuCor. A total of 12,053 PDLs had been freed since President Marcos assumed office.
