'Kabastusan ng bibig': More solons demand apology from Chong

House of Representatives members have amplified the call for former Biliran lone district Rep. Glenn Chong to issue a public apology after he threatened to slap President Marcos' wife, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos.

Deputy Speaker Quezon 2nd district Rep. David Jay-jay Suarez, Assistant Minority Leader 1-Rider Party-list Rep. Rodge Gutierrez, and Zambales 1st district Rep. Jefferson Khonghun all expressed disgust over Chong's remarks during a press conference Monday, March 18.

"Without a doubt! [He should issue a public apology]¿ He should, I mean the words that he uttered against our First Lady are totally uncalled for. He should, so I don't only demand it, but I think out of common courtesy and basic human nature, I think he should," Suarez said.

"He may have his misgivings, he may feel bad about certain things in life, but to say that on TV I think it's totally uncalled for and he should [apologize]," he added.

Gutierrez echoed Suarez's sentiments, as well as his frustration.

"I think on behalf of all the women that we love, I think all of us should demand an apology from this person (Chong). Because never should it be acceptable in furtherance of political rhetoric to allude to violence against women," he said.

"The question is...acceptable na po ba ang ganitong pananalita (are these kinds of remarks acceptable)? Is that what we have come down to? I don't think so, we take a stand and I think that we as a people should demand accountability for statements such this," said the 1-Rider Party-list solon.

Khonghun was just as appalled as his two colleagues over Chong's "slap threat".

"Sa society natin hindi naman katanggap-tanggap iyung kabastusan ng bibig (Having a dirty mouth isn't acceptable in our society)," Khonghun said.

"So, my unsolicited advice, sana bago tayo nagbibitiw ng mga ganitong salita, sana pinag-iisipan muna natin mabuti...naririnig din ng mga kabataan din iyong mga sinasabi natin at sana maging mabuting ehemplo tayo sa ating mga mamamayan," he noted.

(Hopefully we think about it first before we say words like these...the youth also hears these remarks and hopefully we become good examples to our countrymen.)

Chong publicly threatened to the slap the First Lady during the prayer rally in Manila last March 12 that was organized by supporters of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
