Shirts for a cause

For years, global apparel retailer Uniqlo has been known for producing classic styles through its collaborations. This time, it is using its partnership to good use as its latest collections are on a mission to make change. First is its “Peace For All” charity T-shirt project. This line of shirts features the works of Japanese anatomist Takeshi Yoro, the late New York artist Jason Polan, legendary calligrapher Hakujyu Kuiseko, Afghan-born American novelist and Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR Khaled Hosseini, and beloved Finnish character Moomin. Its second collection, dubbed “Hope Away From Home,” showcases the winning designs from the 2023 Youth with Refugees Art Contest co-organized with UNHCR.

The brand’s parent company, Fast Retailing, contributes 100 percent of profits from the sale of “Peace for All” T-shirts (equivalent to 20 percent of the selling price) to three international aid organizations providing humanitarian assistance to people impacted by poverty, discrimination, violence, and conflict. Donations are made equally to UNHCR (the UN refugee agency), Save the Children, and Plan International through their representatives in Japan.

‘70s glam

When we think of the ‘70s, what usually comes to mind is the era’s glamorous way of dressing. That is where Swedish fashion brand H&M sourced its inspiration for its spring-summer 2024 collection. The newest H&M Studio line presents modern silhouettes with a dash of 1970s style codes.

Key pieces rejuvenate wardrobe classics with of-the-minute details. A pale-blue leather coat communicates simple sophistication alongside relaxed tailoring, including a sharp-shouldered blazer reissued from the H&M Studio archive. Fitted and flared denim exudes laid-back polish together with rhinestone-speckled loungewear.

As night falls, a snakeskin-printed minidress hits a subtly retro note alongside a flattering burnt-orange maxi dress. Attitudinal accessories span smooth knee-high leather boots, low-heeled leather mules, and bold rhinestone jewelry. The signature padded H&M Studio bag, a recurring favorite across the seasons in varying colorways and sizes, returns in a snakeskin-printed, scaled-down iteration.

The collection emphasizes high-quality compositions, with a range of more sustainable and conventional materials. Highlights include chrome-free leather, premium wool, organic cotton, and Infinna, a cellulose fiber made from post-consumer textiles.

H&M Studio’s spring-summer 2024 collection is set to be launched in-store and at hm.com on March 12.

‘The Endless Ride’

Footwear and apparel brand Vans brings to the Philippines its latest collaboration with Malaysia’s living skateboarding legend, Pa’din Musa. The second Vans x Pa’din Musa capsule collection features the Skate Slip-on and Skate Old Skool, each adorned with elements that pay homage to Pa’din’s cherished Pulau Pinang. All 2 silhouettes sport the color blue in suede, a representation of the water that surrounds the island, with stripes of yellow and white that symbolize peace and tranquillity. Honouring Pa’din’s legacy as a true hard-blooded skater, a touch of red is visible as the foxing tape for that classic Vans look.

The rubber sole on Pa’din Musa’s shoe collection further celebrates his love of being on the open road with custom debossed tire tracks made out of SickStickTM rubber with the Duracap finishing, while the inner PopCushTM footbeds feature an x-ray scan of his metatarsal on the right foot that was once broken due to a skateboarding incident after 30 years of skating. Embroidered on the heel counter are the legendary skater’s signature initials.
