Water relief in calamity-hit N. Mindanao: PH Red Cross deploys water tankers

Due to flooding caused by the shearline and the trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) in Northern Mindanao, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) dispatched water tankers to provide safe and clean drinking water for thousands of individuals in the region.

PRC sent two water tankers to help communities with over 8,327 individuals that benefited from the 44,200 liters of water distributed in Davao de Oro and Davao Del Norte.

PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon emphasized the importance for all affected individuals to access fresh and clean drinking water.

“Access to water is immediately disrupted after a hazard event, such as flood and landslides, because water sources were damaged and compromised," Gordon said.

"This is why provision of clean water is among the standard response of PRC to communities affected by disasters," he added.

As of Feb. 7, the PRC has extended support to communities impacted by the shearline and LPA in Davao City, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, Agusan del Norte, and Davao del Norte.

The assistance includes blood pressure monitoring for 190 individuals, hot meals distributed to 6,273 people, child-friendly activities provided for 224 children, distribution of bottled water to 300 individuals, provision of 65 cadaver bags, and rescue and emergency assistance offered to 251 persons.

The humanitarian organization is among the first responders that aided affected families in Mindanao.

On Feb. 7, the PRC assisted in the search and rescue operations for passengers of three buses buried in a massive landslide in Barangay Masara, Maco, Davao de Oro.

Furthermore, PRC has vowed to continue providing humanitarian assistance in the region, including the distribution and promotion of hygiene kits, water sampling, the provision of psychological first aid, and the assessment of affected areas.
