2 dead in five-car smashup in Cebu City

CEBU CITY – Two persons were killed in a five-vehicle smashup on Osmeña Boulevard here at noon on Thursday, February 8.

The fatalities, a man and a woman, were on board a motorcycle. They were declared dead in a hospital where they were taken after the accident, police said.

The accident also involved two private vehicles and two Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJs).

According to jeepney driver Jomel Sabredo, a Nissan Terra driven by a 62-year-old man lost control of the steering wheel while trying to overtake another vehicle.

Police said the wayward Nissan Terra hit three other vehicles and the motorcycle whose riders were thrown off because of the impact.

Police Major Jonathan dela Cerna, chief of the Traffic Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office, said the accident happened in an area where movement of vehicles is slow because of traffic.

“We were also shocked because supposedly that place is known for having slow-moving traffic,” said Dela Cerna.

Police said it was possible that the driver of the Nissan Terra rattled and plowed the vehicles in front after stepping on the accelerator instead of the brake.

A charge for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and multiple physical injuries and damage to properties may be filed against the driver of the Nissan Terra.
