The House Committee on Legislative Franchises has given an ultimatum of sorts to Pastor Apollo Quiboloy.
Quiboloy, founder of television network SMNI and a controversial religious group leader, must attend the next hearing of the House panel, or else get cited in contempt.
What happens next will be unsavory for him, committee vice chairman Surigao del Sur 2nd district Rep. Johnny Pimentel said. Pimentel passed on the warning to SMNI's legal counsel Mark Tolentino.
"I'd like to remind Attorney Tolentino to please advise your principal, Pastor Quiboloy, to attend the next hearing because this committee has already previously issued a subpoena," the Mindanao congressman said at the tail end of the panel hearing Tuesday, Feb. 7.
"Failure on his part to attend during the next hearing, this committee might be constrained to issue a contempt order to him. So paki-advise na lang po para hindi na tayo dumating dun," Pimentel said.
(So please advise him so that we don't have to come to that point.)
Should Quiboloy continue to ignore the solons' summons, despite the contempt order, "then we’ll be constrained to request for a warrant of arrest for him to appear here", said Pimentel.
Chaired by Parañaque City 2nd district Rep. Gus Tambunting, the legislative franchises committee is reviewing the operating franchise of SMNI for alleged violation of it, including the supposed spread of fake news.

The subpoena for Quiboloy was sought earlier in the hearing by Pimentel after Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas questioned the SMNI founder's continued absence in the ongoing investigation.
"I think it’s about time that we call for Pastor Quiboloy na pumunta dito (to come here) to answer our questions, our specific questions," said Brosas, a member of the Makabayan bloc.
SMNI representatives have been trying to play down Quiboloy’s influence on the network during the course of the panel probe. The network's operations had earlier been suspended indefinitely by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).
Quiboloy is the spiritual adviser of former president Rodrigo Duterte. No date has been set for the next hearing.
