In these times of conflict and unrest, to strive for peace through negotiation is no simple task. But that doesn’t stop Ramon Magsaysay awardee Miriam Coronel-Ferrer from trying.
Coronel-Ferrer’s win at the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Awards is a testament to her efforts to keep the peace. She is best known for chairing the government peace panel in negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front during the administration of President Benigno Aquino III.

She also has previous experience working as a senior mediation adviser at the United Nations. Currently, she is a political science professor at the University of the Philippines.
Through a statement, the Ramon Magsaysay Awards finds Coronel-Ferrer a worthy recipient for her continued emphasis on “the important role that women play in inclusive peace-building.”
Coronel-Ferrer, alongside the other winners (education advocate Korvi Rakshand, food sovereignty advocate Eugenio Lemos, and holistic healthcare advocate Ravi Kannan R.), is “redefining inclusivity in these modern yet troubled times... Their collective message is very simple yet often forgotten: Treat one another with love, care, and respect.”
By being recognized internationally for her efforts, Coronel-Ferrer gives hope that more people will learn the importance of diversity and inclusivity in peace-building. After all, when discussing peace, we must always strive to ensure there is peace for all.
