Bilibid has new park for PDLs' visitors

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has constructed a new park for visiting families and other guests of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.

The park is located on top of what was rumored as mass graves for killed PDLs.  The 5,000 square-meter land now has a playground for children and gazebos for visitors.

“Overall ‘yan ay part ng reformation nila (this is part of the reformation of PDLs), said BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said on Thursday, Feb. 29, during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the visitor’s park.

“Mas mabilis silang magbabagong buhay at makakalaya kapag makita nila pamilya nila (The inmates will be able to reform faster and be released early once they get to see their families,” Catapang said. 

“Naalala n’yo ‘yung septic tank? Ito ‘yung septic tank kung saan tayo nag-search kay Cataroja (Do you still remember the septic tank? This is where the septic tank is located and where we tried looking for the remains of Bilibid inmate Michael Cataroja whom we thought was dead),” he said. 

It can be recalled that BuCor mobilized its personnel to search for the remains in the septic tank last year after prison officials received information that it has been used as a mass grave for slain inmates.

The search was made after Cataroja, who was committed to the Bilibid July 26, 2022 after he was sentenced from 12 years to 20 years for violations of Presidential Decree (PD) 1612 or the Anti-Fencing Act Law, went missing in July last year.

Subsequently, Cataroja got arrested on Aug. 17, 2023 in Angono, Rizal and authorities only found a piece of chicken bone inside the septic tank.

NBP Supt. Roger Boncales said the visitor’s park was constructed in four months.

He added that most of the materials they used in building the playground were from recycled materials found inside the Maximum Security Compound of the Bilibid while the rest were donations from anonymous donors.
