UNHRC assured of human rights protection in Philippines

The Philippines assured the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that it remains committed to uphold human rights in the country, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

In a statement, the DOJ said the assurance was conveyed by Undersecretaries Jesse Hermogenes Andres and Raul Vasquez who head the delegation of the DOJ during the UNHRC's session in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Undersecretaries Andres and Vasquez echoed the sentiments expressed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for renewed commitment to human rights, condemnation of human rights violations, and support for the UN Agenda for Protection -- a system-wide initiative aimed at preventing and responding to human rights violations,” the DOJ said. 

“With emphasis on national efforts, the DOJ delegation to the UNHRC highlighted its ongoing efforts to promote and protect human rights at the national level, including initiatives to address issues such as gender-based violence, discrimination, and access to justice,” it also said. 

It said the the DOJ delegation also engaged in various side events and bilateral meetings during the UNHRC session “to exchange perspectives and explore avenues for collaboration on human rights issues.”

“The DOJ actively participates in international forums like the UNHRC to collaborate with the global community in addressing global challenges and advancing the cause of human rights for all,” it added.
