E-trikes apprehended in Taguig

The Taguig City government started apprehending e-trikes (electric tricycles), which have been barred from passing national roads and being used as public transportation to pick up passengers in the city.  

On Feb. 18, the city government announced strict guidelines on the use of e-trikes for the safety of all road users.

Taguig said the Traffic Management Office and Land Transportation Office (LTO) will strictly enforce regulations on the use of e-trikes based on LTO Administrative Order 2021-039, or the  “Consolidated Guidelines in the Classification, Registration and Operation of All Types of Electric Motor Vehicles.”

All e-trikes in Taguig are prohibited from passing national roads in the city such as C6, C5 and Kalayaan Avenue except for crossing. 

E-trikes are barred from being used as public transportation for fetching passengers and these are limited to just for personal use only. 

Data provided by the Taguig Police and Southern Police District coming from the Traffic Management Office (TMO) showed that 21 e-trikes were apprehended on Feb. 19 and 20. 

On Feb. 19, four e-trikes were apprehended in Barangay Lower Bicutan and one in Barangay Napindan in Taguig. 

A total of 16 e-trikes were apprehended on Feb. 20: 11 in Barangay Lower Bicutan, three in Barangay Hagonoy and two in Barangay New Lower Bicutan. 

The guidelines also stated that it is also prohibited to modify and change the design of an e-trike such as attaching a sidecar. 

In addition, all drivers and passengers of e-trikes are also required to wear helmets.  All e-trikes are required to use the right side of the road to prevent blocking other vehicles and ensure orderly flow of traffic. 

The Taguig City government also said e-trikes can use bike lanes but these should maintain slow speed and give priority to cyclists. 

“Mayroong karampatang parusa ang hindi susunod sa mga nabanggit na regulasyon (There will be appropriate punishment for those who will violate the said regulation),” the city government warned.
