An Indonesian fugitive ordered arrested in his country on human trafficking charges has been apprehended in Makati City by agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco identified the foreigner as Aris Wahyudi, 43, who was arrested last Tuesday, Feb. 20, by operatives of the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU).
“As a foreigner accused of human trafficking, his presence here poses a serious risk to our poor countrymen who might also fall prey to his illegal scheme,” Tansingco said.
In a statement, the BI said that “Wahyudi is subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Indonesian national police last Jan. 18 for allegedly committing the crime of trafficking in persons."
“He was specifically charged with violation of a provision in Indonesia’s Eradication of the Crime of Trafficking in Persons law that aims to provide protection to Indonesia’s migrant workers,” it said.
It also said that Wahyudi allegedly operated “a human trafficking syndicate that illegally recruited and financed Indonesian nationals who were trafficked to work in Cambodia without the proper work permits.”
He is now detained at the BI's facility in Taguig City pending his deportation, it added.
Tansingco himself issued the mission order to arrest the Indonesian for deportation for being an undesirable alien.
