In the past years, Michael Cinco produced collections inspired by his adventures in Paris, Spain, and Iceland, among others. This time, his “Impalpable Dream” collection centered on Japan and its rich culture and images. During the recent Dubai Fashion Week, the Filipino designer unveiled his latest couture collection, taking everyone on a sartorial journey imbued with the allure of geishas, kimonos, and samurai warriors.

“Japan is a perfect source of inspiration for me because of its rich cultural heritage, blending tradition with innovation seamlessly,” Michael told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “The attention to detail and commitment to excellence in craftsmanship resonate deeply with me, fueling my creativity. From the graceful movements of geishas to the meticulous artistry of kimono embroidery, there’s a dynamic energy that inspires me to explore new realms of design.”

It took Michael two months to complete the collection. His creative process involved visiting the country, discovering textiles for the pieces and studying the art of crafting a kimono in Kyoto to ensure their authenticity and quality. Apart from the Japan-sourced materials, the designer also used French tulle and silk Mikado, adding a dose of luxury and sophistication to the collection.

“This hands-on approach allowed me to capture the essence of Japanese culture and tradition in the creation of these garments,” he mused.

The result was a poignant display of wearable art, celebrating Japan’s cultural treasures. The charming cherry blossoms and its other natural wonders were mirrored through embroideries seen on Michael’s couture gowns. His menswear pieces were adorned with Japanese art, while structured garments with sharp lines and bold metallic accents channel the fierce energy of samurai warriors. The spirit of “Madam Butterfly” was alive in his delicate kimonos. For Michael, the “The Impalpable Dream of Japan” collection was a fusion of elegance and strength, adding a modern twist to the age-old Japanese elements.

“The goal in creating ‘The Impalpable Dream of Japan’ was to capture the essence and beauty of Japanese culture in a tangible form,” the designer said. “It sought to transport wearers into a world where the mystique and elegance of Japan come to life, inviting them to experience the ethereal beauty of the country through exquisite designs.”
