Mary Jane Veloso undergoes orientation, diagnostics at CIW

Convicted drug courier Mary Jane Veloso has been transferred to a regular dorm at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Friday, Dec. 27.

In a statement, the BuCor said that Veloso was transferred to a regular dorm at the CIW’s Reception and Diagnostic Center (RDC) after her five-day quarantine period ended last Thursday, Dec. 26.

“This arrangement not only promotes a sense of community but also emphasizes the importance of shared experiences and mutual support among the women as they embark on their individual paths toward reform and rehabilitation,” said CIW acting superintendent CT/Supt. Marjorie Ann Sanidad.

Sanidad noted that Veloso will be staying at a dorm measuring 48x32 feet which she will share with 30 other newly-received persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

The BuCor said that will remain at the RDC for the next 55 days for mandatory orientation, diagnostics, and classification.

The BuCor explained “this initial phase is designed to help new PDL like Veloso familiarize herself with the rules and regulations of the corrections facility, as well as the rights and privileges afforded to PDLs.” 

“The orientation will also provide vital information regarding various rehabilitation programs, health services, time allowances, and grievance mechanisms accessible to individuals under custody,” it said.

It also said that BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang has ordered the translation of Veloso’s prison records from Indonesia which is currently in Bahasa.

“This translation is crucial for the Bucor as it will enable them to assess whether Veloso's incarceration in Indonesia can be officially recognized as valid prison time under their jurisdiction,” it added.
